Arrival of the last two STS cranes at the Rijeka Gateway container terminal

    February 17, 2025

The last two STS (ship-to-shore) cranes arrived yesterday, February 16th, 2025, at the Rijeka Gateway container terminal. The new cranes have the same technical characteristics and dimensions as the previous two, which means that, with a raised “boom” for transshipment of containers, they are as high as 138 meters, and the weight of each crane is 1,700 tons. This delivery marks the completion of the key equipment arrival at the terminal, given that during the last year, in addition to the first two large coastal cranes, two cranes for transshipment of containers on the railway (RMG) and 15 terminal cranes (RTG) were delivered. The construction of the terminal is approximately 75 percent complete, and it is a project that brings great economic benefits to the Rijeka basin and beyond and restores the status of the most important container port in this part of Europe to the Port of Rijeka.

The new coastal cranes and their significance were presented by the President of the Management Board of Rijeka Gateway, Peter Corfitsen, Commercial Director of Rijeka Gateway, Maja Borčić, and the Executive Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority, Mr. Denis Vukorepa. Denis Vukorepa, Executive Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority, recalled the signing of the concession agreement with the company Rijeka Gateway in November 2021 and emphasized that this is a contract of exceptional importance for the City of Rijeka, the Port of Rijeka Authority, the port of Rijeka, the Rijeka traffic route and the entire port and transport system of Croatia. The total investment in the new container terminal amounts to about 600 million euros and represents the most important and most valuable contract in the history of the Port of Rijeka.

The total investment includes the investment of the Port of Rijeka Authority in the amount of EUR 106.7 million in the construction of 400 meters of coastline with the hinterland, a joint investment of the Port of Rijeka Authority and HŽ Infrastruktura in the amount of EUR 31.6 million for the project of building a new intermodal terminal, the investment of Hrvatske ceste in the amount of EUR 70 million in the construction of the new D-403 road, the investment of the Port of Rijeka Authority in the amount of EUR 4.5 million in the internal port connecting road with the state road DC 403 and the investment of concessionaire Rijeka Gateway d.o.o. in the amount of EUR 380 million (Phase 1 and Phase 2).
