Competitive depth of the new container terminal
With a 18-meter-deep terminal in the Bakar and a current cargo terminal in Omišalj that reaches 30 meters in depth, Port of Rijeka would fit into “deep port” category even for container traffic after construction of the Zagreb Deep Sea Container Terminal. In order to keep pace with competing ports, Port Authority Rijeka has begun the realization of the new Deep Sea Container Terminal, thus securing new port capacity. This is the most significant object of the Rijeka Gateway project, conceived as a straight dock with a final length of 680 m with an average width of 300 m. The planned depth of the sea at the dock is at least 20 m and allows the reception of container ships of all sizes. The terminal is built in two phases, with the first phase involving the construction of a 400 m long waterway, and the second phase building of an additional 280 m. At the end of both phases, the port of Rijeka will have a total length of 680 m. The construction of the first stage of the dock is in the final phase, and in parallel with the construction of the dock will reconstruct the railway terminal interface and build the connecting road D-403. The continuation of the remaining terminal phase of the terminal is the obligation of the future concessionaire. The concessionaire, selected on the international tender, will receive a concession for the management, construction and use of the new container terminal.
