Interreg Euro-MED – RENEWPORT
Cross-border cooperation programme: Interreg Euro-MED 2021.- 2027.
Project title: RENEWPORT – Harnessing RENEWable energy potential for clean
energy transition of MED PORTs
Project acronym: RENEWPORT
Project duration: 33 months
European co-financing: 80%
Total budget: € 2.995.300,00
Budget allocated to Port of Rijeka Authority: € 280.000,00
Lead partner: Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea
Project description:
The RENEWPORT project was approved for co-financing in December 2023 as part of the Interreg Euro-MED Program call for the period 2021-2027, with the specific objective 2.4:” Promoting climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention, resilience, taking into account eco-system-based approaches”. It is a 33-month project that started in January 2024 and in which a total of 10 project partners from 8 EU countries participate: Italy, Slovenia, France, Spain, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece.
Project objectives:
RENEWPORT aims to tackle the challenge of mitigating climate changes by exploiting renewable energy sources in Mediterranean ports, prioritizing the transition to clean energy. To achieve this goal, the RENEWPORT partnership is structured ensuring the geographical relevance of the proposal and the technical capacity of the consortium as a whole, which can significantly contribute to achieving the expected changes at the transnational level.
Test (thematic) project of the Port of Rijeka Authority:
During the project, pilot actions and investment measures are going to be adopted in the field of sustainable development; in this context, activities will take place in the Port of Rijeka to create a renewable energy supply. As part of the Interreg Euro-MED – RENEWPORT Pilot project, the Port of Rijeka Authority intends to create the detailed design and construction of a photovoltaic power plant on the roof of the administration building. The photovoltaic power plant will have a power of 50 to 60 kw and will cover about 50% of energy costs from green sources.
Test project background:
Related projects that preceded the action:
- Administrative building of the Port of Rijeka has the important historical and cultural value. It was built in 1885 on the pier Zichy for the purpose of the Royal Naval Administration under the Hungarian government.
- In the scope of necessary facade renewal in 2019 all external air conditioning units were replaced with internal air conditioning system. Total value of this project amounted to € 390 000.
- In addition, in 2022 Port of Rijeka Authority purchased electric vehicles and installed electric car charging station on the administrative building parking area. The project was funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia programme, entitled SUSPORT – SUStainable PORTs with the main objective of enhancing the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of the ports.
