Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture
The European Capital of Culture 2020 was officially open on February 1, 2020. Under the slogan “Port of Diversity” and the all-day opening program, the city of Rijeka officially became the European Capital of Culture. The all-day program started at 7 am and included 70 events at 30 locations, with the central opening program “Opera Industriale” at the Rijeka port, in the evening.
The central art program of the opening was held at the passenger port area, at all the piers, starting from De Francheschi’s, Adamic’s, through the Carolina Rijeka’s pier all the way to Riva Boduli, and the Molo longo breakwater at Rijeka with a free access for 20,000 citizens and visitors.
The European Capital of Culture is a cultural project and title awarded since 1985 by the European Commission in competition between cities, which must prove that they understand culture as an important area of their development and transformation.
The Port of Rijeka Authority is the official project partner in the program “Sweet and Salty” in cooperation with other partners: Society of Architects Rijeka, Center for Industrial Heritage of the University of Rijeka, Civic Associations Second Sea and Platform 9.81 while project manager is Center for Advanced Studies of Southeast Europe University of Rijeka.
