DigLogs Newsletter N. 8 - June 2020

We are pleased to inform you that despite COVID -19, our project partners have continued working on the project activities, with small delays. We are in the project phase when we should consult with stakeholders and collect their feedback. Based on all feedbacks and pilot details, Intermodal Logistics Training Consortium and University of Trieste will be able to draft a final version of roadmaps, assembling the 7 resulting roadmap outputs to produce the 2 originally stated roadmap deliverables, one oriented to increase competitiveness of multimodal transport services and one aimed at increasing harmonization of passenger mobility. We should receive valuable information from the stakeholders, which will ultimately help us to fulfill the following vision statement: “In five years, most of the transport flows, concerning freight and passengers, of the Italy-Croatia area will be digitized and therefore connected through innovative ICT solutions able to support a wide range of IT services for logistics operators, industrial users, private passengers and public authorities.”

DigLogs Series on Proposed Pilot Innovations:
1^st Pilot - Mobile Applications for Passengers Security in Trieste, Italy

Improving emergency management on passenger ships

Mobile Security Application Leveraging Bluetooth Technology

The pilot focuses on an innovative mobile security application for mobile phones, smart watches and other mobile devices which leverage Bluetooth technology to localize and communication with passengers through the connections to the nearest beacons

Pilot Scenario

The University of Trieste will be working together with the different stakeholders for the realization of this pilot:

Shipping companies
Shipyards in charge of building the testing ship
Mobile security application developers
Bluetooth net specialists and beacon suppliers

Ideal Implementation Scenario

The solution has been created for passenger ships, roll-on and roll-off passenger ships and port terminals. It targets passenger areas (e.g., public areas and cabin corridors onboard ships, every area accessible to passengers) but can also be to managing areas closed off to passengers. In order to reap the benefits of this type of innovation, the solution would need to be deployed at a shipping company level, across associations for different shipping companies and dispersed across different passenger terminals. The time needed for such divulgation across different realities is around 5 years.
The pilot is, nonetheless, also important for different stakeholders:

Passenger terminals on the opportunities offered for the development of customized experiences in terms of advertisements, commercial and other trip proposals
Shipping companies for the protection and responsiveness of the passengers and crew.
Port authorities to promote passenger safety and security onboard ships and in passenger terminals.
Regional development agencies in the promotion of the adoption of the mobile security application, and its potential synergies with other commercial (and non-commercial) offerings to passengers of ships
Universities and research institutes for analyzing and improving evaluation simulation and procedures.

DigLogs is a European project funded by the INTERREG Italy – Croatia CBC Programme priority axis 4 - Maritime transport that aims to create the technological solutions, models and plans to establish the most advanced digitalised logistic processes for multimodal freight transport and passengers’ services in the Italy-Croatia area. This project will have a significant impact in terms of diffusion and effectiveness of digitalised services and ICT support for the quality, safety and environmental sustainability.
